Mayor’s Message

A Message from your Mayor…

mayor2015Dear Residents and Friends:

Years in our lives are not much unlike chapters in an enthralling novel. As the year or chapter ends, one tends to reflect on the past, contemplating our accomplishments as well as our disappointments, but at the same time welcoming the next year or chapter with all of the exciting opportunities it holds. This particular year certainly encompasses that sentiment since after sixteen glorious years as your Mayor, 2018 will be my last. It has been my esteemed honor to serve as your Mayor, and will look back on them as some of the fondest years in my life.

The Bellmawr motto is “Progress Never Stops”, and the Borough’s accomplishments in 2017 more than live up to the billing. First and foremost, the Borough was part of a small minority in South Jersey by duly extending our residents and businesses a net zero municipal tax increase. We work very hard to offer the best governmental services at the lowest possible tax rate through diligent financial management, leveraging of shared service programs, and active participation in grant and financial aid offerings.

A shining example of the latter was the opening of the Batting Cages on Essex Avenue, which was fully funded by the NJ-DOT as part of their construction mitigation obligation in relation to the Direct Connect/Missing Moves project. Additionally, Borough Hall enjoyed a renovation to the main entrance, adding ADA- compliant doors and a chair lift. This too, was funded in large part through a CDBG grant administered by the Camden County Improvement Authority. Finally, back in November on Veteran’s Day, the Borough proudly unveiled Veteran’s Memorial Park, complete with a monument honoring all those who served, a new basketball court, and all surrounded by fresh landscaping with scenic views of Big Timber Creek.

As for 2018, the Progress continues. One of the more exciting initiatives in Bellmawr is the redevelopment of the Waterfront Development site. After multiple years of negotiations and lobbying, the NJ-DOT finally acknowledged their inherent responsibility to improve the local roadway access adjacent to the site in relation to their Direct Connect/Missing Moves project. Additionally, with the former landfill site approaching 100% environmental remediation, commercial development is now on the horizon. Site development will begin in earnest with construction of parkland which will include a one- mile waterfront walking trail. Other projects slated for 2018 include upgrades to the Rec Center, construction of a dog park, and further long- needed renovations to Borough Hall.

Finally, thank you for your support over the years. My sincere appreciation goes out to my colleagues on Council, both past and present, as well as all of the Borough employees I have worked with throughout my tenure. Together, as a team, we continually endeavored to ensure Progress Never Stops in our great Borough of Bellmawr.

Yours in service,

sig

Frank R. Filipek
